O Tannenbaum...

Finally had the opportunity to get my Yuletide tree last week. Rather than just pick one up at a local nursery, I decided that the experience of going out to a farm and harvesting one would be more interesting. So, after a 30-minute country drive with Sammy, Kurt, and his kids, we found this lovely tree:

Update on W.H. Berger, Carpenter

A friend of mine e-mailed the following to me some time ago but I forgot to post it here until now:

The origins of Berger Bros may be traced to the late 1800s. William H. Berger was born in Milton, Pennsylvania, in 1841. He learned carpentry before enlisting as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War in 1862. After the war, Berger moved to Philadelphia and began his life's work as a builder and contractor. In 1874 he founded William Berger & Company, manufacturers of tinners' and roofers' supplies. He was soon joined in the business by his brother, and the company name was changed to Berger Bros Company. (http://www.enotes.com/company-histories/berger-bros-company)

Perhaps he was the father (or grand-father?) of W.H. Berger, the carpenter who built my porch back in 1937 (see blog post dated Sunday, July 13, 2008)...
